TH 340: Climate Theater Justice Action
The Climate Justice Theater Action class is a bridge class that explores the ways in which theater can be a vital part of climate justice in the United States by examining the relationships between power, justice, and identity. Students actively participate in the biennial Climate Change Theatre Action 2023 global event by researching, planning, creating, and implementing performances per the CCTA guidelines. In addition, students will be tasked with creating an accompanying digital dramaturgy site that positions the plays within larger social, political, historical, ecological, economic, and cultural contexts.
CCTA 2023
Climate Change Theater Action (CCTA) is a worldwide annual festival of short plays about climate justice. It was founded in 2015, and has now become a collaboration between the The Arts and Climate Initiative (US) and Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts (Canada). Every year, 50 playwrights from across the globe are commissioned by the festival to write 5 minute short plays, which are then made accessible to any potential organizers who may want to produce. Along with the production of plays, organizers are encouraged to attach an action to their play that in some way benefits the fight for climate justice. Our Climate Justice Theater Action class is participating in this festival through the creation of digital dramaturgy sites, play productions, and organizing activism.
